Bangalore Metro: BMRCL decides to split the project
In a major development related to Bengaluru Namma Metro project, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd., (BMRCL) on Thursday decided to split the under ground construction project into two parts. This decision was taken in view of the earlier lowest bid was more than the estimated cost of Rs. 2400 crore, this time BMRCL wanted to reduce the cost by attracting more bidders. According to BMRCL Chairman M. Ramachandran the board of directors of BMRCL, which met in New Delhi, decided to separate the Majestic-City Market stretch (North-South Corridor) of the underground section and the Majestic-Cricket Stadium (East-West Corridor) stretch in to two seperate projectcs.
The earlier tender for the separated stretch would be recalled and while fresh bids would be invited for the separated parts, however, BMRCL decided to continue the negotiations with the already short-listed lowest bidder for the Majestic-Cricket Stadium stretch.
Originally, BMRCL invited bids for the entire underground stretch ? construction of seven underground stations and boring tunnels ? as one package and a joint venture led by Continental Engineering Corporation (Taiwan) had emerged the lowest bidder. However, the lowest bid was said to be more than the tender estimate cost of Rs. 2,400 crore and BMRCL had been negotiating to bring down the costs.
In a effort to reduce the cost, BMRCL expects more companies joining the fray as they are discouraging the big players participating the second time as they might bring more overheads and might form as syndicate. According the BMRCL chairman, the revised deadline for te completing the entire I of Bengaluru's 'Namma Metro' is September 2012, to achieve this milestone of the project, the fresh bidder would be finalised in three months and BMRCL would ask the selected company to strictly adhere to the schedule.
